Project Overview

The intelligent upgrade project for high-mast lighting, a collaboration between IoTCOMM and Xiamen Haitian Terminal, has been successfully completed .

This project established an smart lighting control system that significantly reduces energy consumption while ensuring 24-hour operational safety at the terminal.

Challenges

Xiamen Haitian Terminal is a crucial container hub in the western economic zone of the Taiwan Strait. To ensure nighttime safety, nearly one hundred high-mast lights were kept on year-round, resulting in significant energy waste.

The operation of Xiamen Haitian Terminal is continuous and highly dynamic; existing timed or manual control methods are insufficient to meet the demands of flexible scheduling.

Located in a coastal area, Xiamen Haitian Terminal is constantly exposed to high salt spray, high humidity, strong winds, and intense summer sunlight, placing stringent demands on the corrosion resistance and operational reliability of its lighting equipment.

Xiamen Haitian Terminal required an intelligent lighting system capable of dynamically adapting to the port's operational rhythm to support its sustainable development and operational safety.

Solution

IOTCOMM, with its self-developed Hotu IoT cloud platform at its core, deeply integrates with the port's ITOS operating system, upgrading the lighting system from a single energy-consuming unit into a "smart sensing network" that is linked to the production process in real time.

To ensure that each lighting circuit accurately matches the actual site conditions, we equipped each high-mast light in the terminal yard with a complete intelligent control unit, including a centralized controller and metering module. In the office area and parking lot, we added 4G terminal controllers and illuminance collectors to achieve accurate illuminance data collection.

Benefits

Intelligent Dimming: The lighting control platform can not only automatically control lighting based on daylight patterns, but also automatically trigger corresponding lighting strategies by parsing real-time work instructions issued by ITOS.

After a work instruction is issued, the lights in the target area immediately turn on at 100% brightness. Lights in non-work areas are turned off at one-third brightness. After the work is completed, the lights enter a 30-minute countdown. After the countdown ends, one-third of the lights automatically turn off, balancing safety margins and energy efficiency.

Energy Saving: Dynamic zoned lighting achieves an overall energy saving rate of over 35%, significantly reducing electricity costs.

Safety Monitoring: Smart hardware automatically collects operational data such as current and voltage, monitors for electrical hazards such as leakage and overload in real time, assesses operational status, and proactively reports fault information, thus enabling proactive safety warnings.

Information Security: The smart hardware uses dedicated 4G Cat.1 network cards for intranet communication, greatly ensuring the information security of the terminal operations.

Equipment Reliability: All IOTCOMM hardware uses highly protective, corrosion-resistant materials and a sealed design, ensuring long-term stable operation in harsh environments.

Lighting Monitoring: The Hotu platform integrates a real-time map of the terminal, comprehensively displaying the status and lighting trajectory of all light poles. It can monitor abnormal light outages, illegal lighting, or insufficient illuminance in real time, achieving safe monitoring of the lighting environment.

Data Management: The control system connects to external smart meters to accurately measure lighting electricity consumption, facilitating the unification of electricity consumption and billing. Meanwhile, the platform automatically generates multi-dimensional energy consumption analysis reports, providing a solid data foundation for port carbon footprint accounting and refined management.
